(Acinonyx jubatus)
Cheetahs are the fastest land mammals, running up to 70mph (114kph) and are able to go from a standing start to 45mph (72kph) in just two seconds. Their tail is compressed and acts like a rudder to help the cheetah change direction accurately and quickly.
Habitat
The cheetah has roamed our planet for some 5 million years. Historically, our modern day cheetah ranged throughout India, the Arabian Peninsula, Asia Minor, and Africa. Although restricted to Africa and a small area in Asia today, fossil remains indicate a version of cheetah existed in Europe and North America.
Diet
Cheetahs are naturally diurnal, preferring to rest at night and hunt during the day. They use their dew claws on their front legs to knock prey off its feet, then kill with a bite to the neck. Favourite prey includes impala, blesbok and cheetah have also been known to bring down prey as large as kudu.
Breeding
Cheetah breed once a year. The female raises the cubs ranging from 2-8 (but usually 3 or 4) herself. They will stay with her for up to two years.
